Okami is Not Game of the Year

Okami, it’s a game that was well talked about before and even after it came out. IGN gave it game of the year even though the readers would have preferred Zelda: Twilight Princess. Just to tell the truth I don’t think this game should have come anywhere close to game of the year and I have valid reasons why. I’ll start with the reasons this game is good. One of the obvious reasons is the incredible art style. It’s unlike anything before it and I absolutely love it. The way you move the paintbrush to make things happen in your environment is also interesting and very intriguing and part of the reason to love this game. My opinion is that Clover Studios should have just scrapped the game for the PS2 and put it on the Wii but that’s beside the point and it’s still a great game play element.

Now to talk about why the game is bad, first of all it’s glitchy, and I don’t know why so many reviewers out there are missing that fact but it is. When you go up to the edge of a cliff there will be a bold line that disappears and objects are constantly popping in and out all the time. That would be the least of my worries though after it’s all said and done.

The game also doesn’t have voice acting which in some cases can be respectable trait especially because bad voice acting can be worse than no voice at all, but in Okami’s case I have to say that it either needed voice acting or a shortening of dialogue. This game takes at least fifteen minutes to start because there is so much typed text in the beginning. And don’t think it stops there it goes throughout the whole game that way. In fact there is a little fairy bug that hops on your nose and is constantly stopping you on your adventure to tell you something. Speaking of the fairy bug that brings me to my final point,

This game is way too easy. You’ll have figured out a major part in the game like you need to make it to a tree across the field and here comes the talking fairy bug to tell you, “You need to go to that tree across the field.” Or you’ll have just learned a new paint move and your about to use it in a obvious spot and here comes the talking fairy bug, “You need to use the paintbrush here to paint the new move you just learned.” It doesn’t stop either, you are constantly being lead down a linear path and not only that but the fairy bug doesn’t let you off the path because it’s always telling you where to go. I wouldn’t say this game was bad but it’s not good either, and it is defiantly NOT game of the year.
